Representation of age

In waterloo they represent age through many different ways. One of these ways is by using fast paced editing and music combined because this fast paced editing and music is used to show one of the students angry and being aggressive to another and this is stereotype of teenagers. They also use mine-en-scene because one of the teachers tries to wear fashionable clothes and the students laugh at him because that isn't what people his age wear because only younger people wear fashionable clothes really which is a stereotype of older people that they are outdated. This too show that people older are seen as weird and different by younger if for what they wear and this is too show that not just older people judge people for their clothes.

Another way they show the stereotype of younger people is by the phrases and way they speak. One of the girls says "init" and this is a stereotype of a chav and young people being chav's and this fits the stereotype. They have done this to show that young people are chav's and this was where the girl was angry so this is another stereotype that all young people are aggressive. They have tried to create a direct stereotype of a teenage chav and they have used her costume to back this up by wearing a really hot skirt. This gives the direct split between the adults and kids because the teachers are in suits and tie and they talk properly and the kids are scruffy and speak chavvy.

They also use mine-en-scene and camera too show that old people are wise. Because one of the old teachers at the start knows something is up so they use a super close up of the camera to emphasise that we are looking at that. He nows something is up which shows he is wise and this is a stereotype of old people. This is going back too the direct comparison between old people and young. In this bit he clicks his fingers and this shows his authority and the stereotype of older people being rude and they think that all people chavs and aren't well behavied so he thinks they are up too no good. This is too show the stereotype of older people from younger people's point of view.

When the girl is angry with the lad they play some music to show the anger and that youth are aggressive but as soon as the teacher comes in who is older and wise the music stops to show they bring calm to the storm. This also reflects to the maturity to the older people compared to the rashness of a younger person.

They use close ups of the younger people because they want too see the aggressive facial expressions because this is a stereotype of younger people but when the camera is on the older people they use medium shots because they don't need to focus on their expressions because their isn't much expressions but what they do look at is their body language and posture because a stereotype of older people is they are less able physically ad they are using this too show they are weak and the kids think they can do what they want but then the older teacher tells them what to do.

Hotel Babylon

Editing- They use fast paced editing throughout most of the clip, they do this to represent the situation they have to act quickly to make sure that they save all of the workers and this is because they are all illegal immigrants, they have used the stereotype that most illegal immigrants are black and this is racism and shown in here because nearly all of the workers who are illegal immigrants are black. They use shot-reverse-shot when the woman is on the floor with diabetes and this is because they want to show that the black woman is on the floor and the others are above her and this is how stereotypically black people were seen, as below others, this is also racism. They use fast pace editing to show the tension building up when the officials are looking for Ibrahim, he is the protagonist in this clip because he is the main good guy and the immigration officer is the antagonist because he is the bad person in the clip, not from a legal point of view but from the viewers point of view. When they are in the staff only room it is pretty ironic because they shouldn't be staff as they are illegal immigrants this is why they use fast paced editing to show the tension if someone comes to the door, this is also partly racist because it is a stereotype that immigrants cant be leaders and managers.

Camera- They use point of view shot when the woman with diabetes is on the floor and the person helping her i giving her jam and this is used to show that they are feeding them enough because she hasn't got enough sugar in her body and that's why she has fainted. There is also the stereotype that all black people are doctors and this is shown here but that is just racism. They do this because using stereotypes gets viewers to watch their programme and this is part of Alvarado's theory that people wont change their opinion on stereotypes unless evidence is shown and by them using stereotypes this is making them happy and agreeing with their stereotype. They use a hand-held camera when they are in the room and this is because they are all scared and shaking so it is portraying their feeling and they are scared because they are illegal immigrants and they don't want to get taken away. They use steadicam when behind the cage thing an showing that the are trapped of in a prison sort of thing and this is stereotypically how black people would have treated in the past, this is racism because they are showing that it is like a prison and that is how black people were kept in the 19 hundreds and this is what they have used it because that is how the hotel is treating the black people, like prisoners. They use tracking shot when the black guy runs downstairs to tell the woman that the immigration team was here and that they need to get people out of sight and the way stereotypes were used here is because there was lots of workers and she chose the black guy, because along time ago people used black people as slaves and sent them to do everything, they have done this because it makes the show look stereotypical and people like this because according to Festinger people are reluctant to change their mind on stereotypes so it makes them happy watching it. They use shallow focus when the immigration team sees the cleaner and this is too show how everything freezes around him and all focus is on his and wha he is going to do because they are looking for him an he is on his own which is another stereotype. The shot where they are all in the room at the same time and when they are all praying shows that no matter what religion or differences they are they are all together and this is ironic because they get treated like they are all different.

Sound- They use diegetic sound on screen when the woman is talking too all of the workers and telling them what to do, this is a stereotype because they are immigrants and before they were told what to do and they didn't have a choice. They use synchronous sound when the immigration team capture the black worker an this is because he is struggling because they are raging him about and this is a stereotype of how black people were treated in the older days. When Ibrahim is in the hall they use diegetic sound because the music is coming from his earphones and the music is getting tense because he is about to get caught and shows why he isn't in the room.

Mise-en scene- Props is used to show ethnicity stereotype because all of the foreign immigrant characters wear old and scruffy clothes where as the white people wear suits and nice clothes which is a stereotype which is that in the older days they wore scruffy clothes because they had less money and less standard of living. The casting is a way of showing ethnicity stereotype because all of the foreign workers are kept downstairs out of sight and all of the white British people are mainly kept up stairs. The lights are mainly very bright, they use a bright side and dark side which causes drama and might be to show both sides, black and white. Another way f showing ethnicity stereotype in the casting is because when they are in the room they realise that one of the people is a doctor and this is ethnicity stereotype because they are usually very educational. They also use the clothes in props to show that they are all one person because they all dress the same and this doesn't give them any identity which is stereotypical how the black people were treated in the slave said. We only start unveiling identities when they go in to the room and we realise that one is diabetic and another is a doctor.

Perkins 5 assumptions

Perkins 5 assumptions are that stereotypes aren't always negative are in relation to hotel Babylon when the worker from Africa says he is a doctor and this is a stereotype but he actually helps the girl who is having a hypoglycaemic attack and they are grateful off that.

The next assumption is that it isn't always about a minority group and with less power and in hotel Babylon this happens because the police officer is a white person and he gets stereotyped because he is showed too be a stereotypical investigator with the suit etc..

The third one is that the stereotype can be true about you. And this relates to hotel Babylon because the

The next assumption is that the stereotype isn't rigid or unchanging

The last assumption that it isn't always false and in hotel Babylon this is shown when the stereotype of the

Task 2

Festinger believed that people are reluctant to adjust their attitude unless face with overwhelming evidence.

If you apply this to hotel Babylon you can see that this is true because they use stereotype so much and this can maybe show that this is why it was popular. Because people believe stereotype so much and this is just agreeing with it, people will be happy that people are agreeing with tier stereotype and this shows that Festinger's theory is correct in most cases.

Task 3

Alvarado's theory.
Pitted- When the media shows adverts of people suffering in Africa we feel we should help them and feel pity for them.

Dangerous- Ethnic groups can be displayed as dangerous for example Yusef Khan is shown to be dangerous so we associate that ethnic group as dangerous.

Exotic- Some ethnic groups can be shown as exotic like south American's are shown as Latina's  and shown to be sex symbols through racy costumes e.g. Shakira.

Humorous- Some ethnic groups are shown to be humorous like the groundskeeper in Simpson's who is Scotish and he always has humorous lines and accidents. They also back up his stereotype with his red hair and thick accent.

Disability Stereotype

Camera- The way disability is shown through this clip using camera is because when they are in the ambulance they use a hand held camera and this shows shaking and this reflects to the disabled guy because he is un steady and shaking because they aren’t strong. Another way they use show and stereotype disability is by

Ex Machina review

Ex Machina review

Ex Machine is a science fiction film about a lad that wins a competition and the prize was too meet the owner of the company and spend a week with him. When the lad arrives there is completely isolated and there is no one around, it is all a bit weird. Then Nathan who is the owner, then shows the lad around the building and when he shows him where he will be sleeping he offers him a chance to see what the guy is working on. Before Nathan shows him what he is working on the lad needs to sign a secrecy act form. He isn’t keen on signing it at first but then he does because Nathan tempts him and puts pressure on him. Then he introduces that what he is working on is an A.I (artificial intelligence). Then the lad gets too meet the robot. They spend a lot of time together then he realises that the robot is cleverer than he thought and that he hadn’t won a competition, he had been chosen because he is single, no parents etc. and he would work perfect with the experiment. He then realises what Nathan is doing there and starts to try and find a way for the robot to escape. He does this and then she ends up leaving without him and returns to the human world.

I think that taking in to account the budget the film was made on they did a very good job of using the special effects they did. They also wanted to make it different than other sci-fi films so they installed 15,000 mini tungsten pea bulbs. They also did well with the actors they didn’t have any A list actors so their box office results were very good bearing in mind they didn’t have any A list actors. But they did have a good story line and left it wide open if they wanted to do prequel and make another. So they did well by leaving it on a massive cliff hanger because no one knows what happened to the robot or Kaylen.

There was quite a lot of bad points to the film which I picked out and the fact that we don’t find out what happened to Kaylen which was really annoying. The other is that it was a bit slow at the start. He was seeing the robot but we didn’t know what the point of him seeing it was for and we didn’t know where it was going there was nothing to suggest she was trying to escape, then it all happened really quick so it was a bit rushed. Also at the end Kaylen says he reprogrammed the doors to open not lock when there is a power cut but then when she leaves he is locked Inside and this didn’t work.

Overall I would give the film a 3.5 out of 10 because the story line was good and it was gripping, but the ending was very rushed and it all happened really quickly. They did leave it on a good cliff hanger though and if there was another I would defiantly go and see it.

Regional stereotype

Mise-en-scene- The way props show regional stereotype for Cornwall is because they are stereotyped to wear suits and this is because it is classed as formal and boring which is another stereotype of down south. Another is the set and stereotypically down south they all live in towns and this is the set for this. This is trying too say that all people there are the same and none of them have identities. The other prop that shows a down south stereotype is the briefcase and expensive accessories. And this shows that down south they are rich and posh and this links in with the accent and being rural and town setting.

Sound- They use diegetic sound which is the accent and this relates too the posh accent. They use this to show how the Do is quite common and he isn't like the other and this is backed up because he doesn't give the woman the prescription at first which is unlike the old doctor.

Editing- They don't use fast-paced editing they use quite slow shots and not a lot of shots which shows everywhere is the same and the place is old because it moves slowly and it is quite boring as their isn't anything to capture.

Camera-
